Crop rotation
The Netherlands, Flanders and Denmark publish their field registers every year, and the harmonized field data keeps every edition. Laid on top of each other they tell what grew on a field, year after year: potatoes every fourth year on the clay of Flevoland, maize on the same sandy field for twenty years, grass that was never ploughed.

About the data
- Fields
- Every edition of three collections in the Fields of the World harmonized field data: the Netherlands (BRP, ), Flanders (Landbouwgebruikspercelen, ) and Denmark (Marker, ). Their crops are mapped to the HCAT crop codes, which this page groups and names.
- Years of a field
- The map shows the fields of the newest edition. For every field a point inside it was looked up in each older edition; the field there gave that year's crop. Outlines change, so a year can belong to a larger or smaller field on the same spot. Where nothing was registered there, or the crop had no HCAT code, the year is blank. Catch crops sown after the main crop (registered in the Netherlands since 2023) are left out.
- Coverage
- Measures
- "How varied" counts the crop groups of the legend among the years with a crop; "how often" is the share of those years with the chosen group. Both need at least five years with a crop; fields with fewer are drawn without colour.
- Built with
- DuckDB spatial joins the editions, tippecanoe makes one PMTiles archive of them; OpenLayers and ol-pmtiles draw it. Code on GitHub.
