Farming regions
Some landscapes are named after what grows in them: the Corn Belt, the wine country of Napa and Bordeaux, the sea of olive trees around Jaén. Colour the fields of one crop and the region draws itself, from a thousand kilometres across down to the single field.
Examples
Each picture is the region as the map draws it, coloured by the crops of its card. Click a card to go there on the map.
About the data
- Fields
- The newest edition of every collection in the Fields of the World harmonized field data with a crop, mapped to the HCAT crop codes, which this page sorts into groups. Collections without crops show as fields without colour.
- Zoomed out
- Further out than a few kilometres per field, the map shows an overview: the land in five-sided A5 cells of equal area, from 133,000 km² to 700 m across, coloured by the share of the cell covered by fields of the chosen crops. Every field counts once, in the cell of its centre: collections that repeat another (field blocks, EuroCrops copies of a national register, the Spanish regions within Spain's own register) are left out.
- Coverage
- Only countries and regions that publish their fields are on the map: most of Europe and the United States (the USDA crop sequence boundaries), not yet South America, Africa or most of Asia.
- Built with
- DuckDB with the A5 extension sums the fields per cell, tippecanoe makes the overview PMTiles; OpenLayers and ol-pmtiles draw it and the fields. Code on GitHub.
